Monday Musings: 'Dexter' Prequel Series Gets McDreamy, Weekend Streams Recap, Paramount+ Raises Prices, 'The Bear' Drops Early, Who Was Phil Harris?
Just another a'MUSing Monday...
Happy Monday!
Starting the week off with a strong STRONG cup of coffee and might end it with a nice bottle of French wine. There’s so much I’m musing about this Monday so let’s get to it!
BREAKING NEWS 📰 THE BEAR: SEASON 3 WILL DROP EARLY!
It’s time to cancel those Wednesday night plans. The Bear: Season 3 will drop a little earlier, at 9pm eastern time on Wednesday, June 26 instead of midnight on Thursday, June 27. All 10 episodes are expected to drop at once, so expect a really long, but expected to-be-great Wednesday night/Thursday morning.
What can fans expect? Apparently the door will be firmly shut on the Carmy-Sydney romance this season (Boo!) Also have no fear, Carmy does get out of the walk-in fridge. Also reports of a more light-hearted season, but with still those anxiety-ridden moments that will keep fans biting your nails and pulling out your hair.
Weekend Streams Recap
Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini (Hulu)
I still have one episode to go of this, but so far, it’s your basic Dateline-esque true crime documentary. Definitely a lot of details I wasn’t aware of before, mostly because I didn’t follow the case all that closely. However, it is pretty captivating and will continue to watch.
Pair this stream with a glass of Pinot Grigio and lululemon leggings.
Black Barbie Documentary (Netflix)
I thought Shonda Rhimes did a fine job on this documentary. Okay, of course, it’s Shonda Rhimes — that girl has the magic touch! I love how the story is framed from a relative of someone who worked for Mattel for over 40 years and knew Barbie’s OG creator Ruth Handler personally. There were also interview with Shonda Rhimes, Misty Copeland and the first woman to create the black Barbie doll for Mattel. Lots of interesting history that needed to be told including the “doll test” which shaped the decision to end segregation in schools . The documentary also spends time focusing on all the work that still needs to be done by Mattel and other toymakers to make dolls more inclusive to every child.
Pair this stream with a glass of Pinot Noir and the chicest earrings.
Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go (Max)
So….this is supposed to be a stand-up special, but it’s more performance art. You might know Hannah Einbinder as Ava on Hacks. I’ve done stand-up before and it’s really a personal thing of what type of material you want to share, but this was very personal. I don’t think Hannah did this for any laughs. It was mostly storytelling with a lot of physical movement on stage. Kind of a dance with words. It wasn’t the best thing I ever saw, nor would I put it on my recommendations list, but I’m glad I saw it.
Pair with Zinfandel and a black tee shirt.
Hotel Cocaine (MGM+)
I love mafia shows. Not sure where that came from, but I’ll watch anything with a gangster storyline and always be rooting for the gangster. Pablo Escobar? Damn, I wish they never caught him. Griselda Blanco? I mean she did this all for her kids! Bumpy Johnson? That guy was just protecting his territory! I started watching Hotel Cocaine, based on the true story of the Hotel Mutiny, Miami’s most notorious hotel during the late seventies when drug lords used to host big names like Liza Minnelli, Cher, Jackie O, and The Twilight Zone’s Rod Serling. I’m just one episode in. The creators are from Netflix’s Narcos and MGM+’s The Godfather of Harlem, both shows I really enjoy, but the production value is a little lower than I expected. There’s a lot of “camp” in the series which tones down the seriousness of the story. Some of the characters are cartooney, but much of that is because everyone is high on cocaine. Will continue to watch, but jury is still out.
Pair with a bottle of champagne, a gold chain, and powdered sugar-topped cookies.
