Sip & Stream: Harvester Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles x Cabaret
Life is a Cabernet! I knew I could use that overused pun one day. This weekend I’m pairing Total Wine & More’s 2024 Wine of the Year with one of my all-time favorite musicals.
Cabaret (1972)
From the opening of this musical directed and choreographed by the legendary Bob Fosse, I was completely captivated by Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies and Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles was absolutely perfect casting. The movie takes place in Weimar Republic-era Berlin at a gentlemen’s club as a female dancer (Bowles) romances two men while the imminent threat of the Nazi party continues to rise.
Interesting Facts About Cabaret
Winner of 8 Oscars, but lost the Best Picture award to The Godfather. It holds the record for winning the most Oscars without winning Best Picture.
The original Broadway production of “Cabaret” opened on November 2, 1966 and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Joel Grey appeared in the original production as the Emcee for which he won Best Featured Actor.
Sally Bowles look in the film was modeled after Jazz Age icon Louise Brooks. Bowles is also based on real-life person Jean Ross, an aspiring actress, singer and writer who had an abortion while working as a cabaret singer in Weimar Berlin.
The interiors of the film were done on sound stages in Munich that had been vacated by the cast and crew of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.
In 2003, The Smithsonian Institution selected this film as one of eight films to be preserved for future generations.
Cabaret is currently streaming on for free on Tubi.
Harvester Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles by Hope Family Wines
Have you been wine tasting in Paso Robles? I guarantee one of your favorite tasting experiences was probably at Austin Hope winery. The Hope Family has quite the diverse portfolio of wines. They have recently broaden their reach into your local grocery and big-box wine stores with less-expensive labels like “Austin” and Total Wine & More’s 2024 Wine of the Year — “Harvester”. The wine itself is an invitation to rich flavors. You’ll get lots of red berries and spice on the nose and your palate will be captivated by its velvety tannins. It’s a drinkable wine for a random Tuesday night and the price warrants a weekday open too. Does it hold a candle to an Austin Hope Cabernet? Yeah, no. However, it’s a great entry level wine to sip until you pick up that $60 bottle for a special occasion — you know, like a Friday night.
Happy Streaming! 📺 🍷
