Sip & Stream 🍷 📺 : Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon x M (1931)
It’s halfway to Halloween 👻 ! Let’s celebrate with a spooky pairing of a scary movie/ frightfully good wine! One of the many film classes I took in my college days was in German Expressionism Cinema (1910-1930s). It introduced a very specific style of films that I found to be quite brilliant. Films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and Nosferatu (1922) used high contrasts of dark and light shadows, a lighting technique known as chiaroscuro that emphasized nightmarish scenes. One of the most famous is Metropolis (1927) from writer/director Fritz Lang, sort of a godfather of German Expressionism film. My favorite Lang film is quietly frightening starring the enigmatic Peter Lorre. Simply titled “M”, the black and white partially silent film, tells the story of a German city terrorized by a child-murderer where the police, who are frantic to catch him, enlist other criminals to join in the manhunt. The entire film runs 1 hour and 39 minutes and is told through stark contrasts of shadows, with no graphic violence, and a backdrop of the haunting piece “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1” (1876) as its soundtrack. You can check out “M” streaming on HBO Max.
Ghost Pines Cabernet: With grapes from both Napa and Sonoma counties, you get the best of both vines in this balanced Cab with flavors of plums and blackberries. You’ll get a bit of salty and sweet (but not too much) of mocha, pound cake, and roasted nuts. This is one of my easy pickups at the local grocery store that’s perfect for any streaming night of the week.
Happy Streaming! 🍷
