Monday Musings: Weekend Recap - 'Heads of State', 'Giada in My Kitchen' Late To The Party with 'Nobody Wants This' and Prime Streaming Deals
Just another a'MUSE'ing Monday
How was everyone’s holiday?! Get some good streams in?
July is just getting started, and although this holiday weekend was packed with patriotic festivities, the streams were fire (except for you — And Just Like That).
Heads of State (Prime Video)
I had sort of a headache this weekend, so I just wanted to stream something completely mindless and ridiculous, and guess what — I found it! Heads of State is a silly action movie starring John Cena and Idris Elba about opposites attract when a movie star President and a stuffy Prime Minister join forces to battle the Russians and insider spies to save NATO. With that being said, I was entertained. The film did what I wanted it to, with a few laughs here and there and some blow-it-up action sequences, but it wasn’t a complete disaster — it actually kept me from thinking about my head hurting.
Giada in My Kitchen (Prime Video)
Another stream for background noise. Giada in My Kitchen apparently is just one 43-minute episode. I was hoping it was an entire series as I love kitchen makeover shows and with Giada cooking with the homeowner in their new kitchen at the end, it was a pretty clever concept. What I liked about it was the kitchen makeover was fun, bright and colorful, not Property Brothers beige. Another rec: my favorite Giada series has to be Giada in Italy which you can stream on Hulu and Peacock. Giada travels throughout Italy, cooking authentic Italian meals in outdoor kitchens with scenic views.
Sirens (Netflix)
What was this? I’m not sure. A story of two sisters with secrets who play wicked games with a rich couple, but who is playing who? I’ve seen this story so many times. It seemed like a Temu version of The Perfect Couple which is a Wish version of The White Lotus, which also all starred Meghann Fahey. I’m intrigued and will watch the second season, which has already been ordered by Netflix, but it was just alright for me, dawg (insert Randy Jackson’s voice from American Idol).
Nobody Wants This (Netflix)
OMG! I love this series. Smiles all the way through. A relationship podcast host falls in love with a hot rabbi. Such clever writing, comedic timing was chef’s kiss, and I love the casting of this series — Kristin Bell, Adam Brody, Timothy Simons, and Justine Lupe were awesome. If you can get past the meddling mother stereotypes, this show is quite perfect. I love the way the writers used location to freshen up otherwise played out rom-com scenes — Kids Camp, Adult Sex Store, a Synagogue, Finding a Stray Dog, a Bat Mitzvah, etc. And the episodes are less than 30 minutes each. Can’t wait for Season 2!
Nonnas (Netflix)
This was cute. I’m not sure if it was because I was on my period (TMI) or this movie was just that tender that I cried at so many scenes. It was quite predictable and a movie I have definitely seen before in some other shape or form, but it was adorable, and it was cool to see all these iconic actresses like Brenda Vaccaro, Lorraine Bracco, Susan Sarandon, and Talia Shire together. Also, it’s based on a true story of a New York restaurant that employed real-life Nonnas to cook in the kitchen.
The Bear renewed for Season 5 at FX. The Residence cancelled after one season at Netflix. Pulse cancelled after one season at Netflix. HGTV’s Battle on the Beach cancelled after four seasons. Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black renewed for Season 2 at Netflix. The Proud Family: Louder and Louder renewed for Season 4 at Disney+.
