Matthew Perry Foundation Is Established To Help People Struggling With Addiction
A foundation has been established in honor of the late Matthew Perry who championed others to find their way to sobriety, a commitment he wanted to be remembered by according to his recently published memoir. “When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first that’s mentioned — I want helping others to be the first thing that’s mentioned. I’m going to live the rest of my life proving that. Addiction is far too powerful for anyone to defeat alone. But together, one day at a time, we can beat it down.” Perry hoped to establish a rehabilitation center for those struggling with addiction. The Matthew Perry Foundation released its first statement, “In the spirit of Matthew Perry’s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction, we embark on a journey to honor his legacy by establishing the Matthew Perry Foundation, guided by his own words and experiences, and driven by this passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible.”

Funny Story: Today is also Kirk Jones birthday. He played Tyrone on Next Friday and Jeremy on Flight of the Phoenix costarring Dennis Quaid. He is better known as a rapper and record producer with the stage name of Sticky Fingaz. When I was a young cashier at Ralph Lauren boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, I always had to asked people what their first and last name was to input it into the register before I could begin to ring up a sale. It was so annoying especially since there were a lot of people who wished to be anonymous while shopping. Anways, Mr. Jones bought some things and I asked….
Me: “May I have your last name, please?
Jones: “Fingaz”
Me: “Could you spell that for me?”
Jones: “F.I.N.G.A.Z.”
Me: “Thank you, and your first name?”
Jones: “Sticky”
Me finally realizing his name is Sticky Fingaz, “Thank you Mr. Fingaz”

Born on this Day: Vivien Leigh (November 5,1913 - July 7, 1967)
You probably know Vivien Leigh as the face of one of the most iconic roles in movie history — Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind, but her life was just as cinematic. Leigh was born Vivien Mary Hartley just before the start of World War I in Darjeeling, India.
Leigh was just six years old when she first visited England in the midst of the war. Her parents decided to leave her there, in a convent so she could have a proper upbringing. She was the youngest of any of the girls there and made friends with the cat that would roam the courtyard. The nuns were kind enough for Vivien to take the cat with her back to her dormitory. Her first friend she made at the dormitory was an eight-year-old Maureen O’Sullivan from Ireland. After 18 months her mother comes to visit her and takes her to a play in London. After that, Vivien insisted on seeing that same play 16 times.
Her father, back home in India is a stage actor and at the convent, Vivian takes all the male roles in the school plays because she finds them much more adventurous. Her favorite actor at the time is Leslie Howard and coincidentally enough she marries a man, Herbert Leigh Holman at the age of 19 who looks just like him. Further coincidence she would star alongside Howard in Gone with the Wind - her character being infatuated with him. Vivien and Herbert would be married for eight years and have one child, a daughter Suzanne.
In 1932, Vivien’s best friend Maureen is in California and making movies. In England, Vivien gets a small role in a film and then in “The Green Sash”, a play in London. Eventually she gets a film role in Fire Over England in 1937 where she meets her future husband Laurence Olivier and they fall in love on set. She gets the chance to read for Gone with the Wind and the rest is movie history.
Olivier and Leigh were married for over twenty years and appeared together in films and also on the stage in New York and London. Leigh won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice -- Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire. She struggled with bipolar disorder and was coined in Hollywood as difficult to work with. She also had recurrent bouts of chronic tuberculosis which ultimately led to her death at the age of 53.

Born on this Day: Natalie Schafer (November 5, 1900-April 10, 1991)
You might know her as Eunice ‘Lovey’ Wentworth Howell aka “Mrs. Howell” from the popular series from the sixties, Gilligan’s Island, but Schafer got her start on Broadway performing in plays before making it to the big screen. She starred in bit roles in many films throughout her career and made even more guest appearances on TV shows like The Love Boat and The Brady Bunch.
Natalie Schafer was born in Red Bank, New Jersey to parents Jennie and Charmles Emanuel Schafer who were both of German-Jewish descent. Although she was born in 1900, she always told people she was born in 1912 after she became famous. No one ever knew her true age. She was the eldest of three children who dreamed of a career on stage and in film.
She moved to Los Angeles in 1941 after appearing on Broadway in 17 plays to work in films. She found success playing bit roles in television series like the “Charm School” episode of I Love Lucy in 1954. She had been typecast early on, playing elitist and snobby characters which made the transition to Mrs. Howell in Gilligans Island quite easy.
In 1969, Schafer starred in the short-lived primetime soap opera, The Survivors on ABC. The soap featured such popular screen actors as Lana Turner and George Hamilton, but low ratings caused the network to cancel it after just one season. Throughout the rest of her career she found success in guest starring roles on T.V. series such as The Beverly Hillbillies, Three’s Company, and Mannix.
Before her passing of liver cancer in Beverly Hills, Schafer donated $2 million to the Lillian Booth Actors Home to renovate the hospital’s outpatient wing which they named the Natalie Shafer Wing in 1993. She was survived by her longtime companion Maurice Hill. She was married once to actor Louis Calhern (1933-1942) and remained childfree.
