Born on this Day Joan Crawford (1906-1977)
Her birth name was Lucille Fay LeSueur and she was born in San Antonio, Texas. Her parents had already separated by the time she was born, and by the time she was in her teens she had already had three stepfathers. In her early life, Joan Crawford worked odd jobs, but her ticket into show business was her talent for dancing. She was recruited into a chorus line which had her traveling to cities across the midwest and on the east coast. After two years as a chorus girl, she headed to Hollywood where she quickly landed a bit part in Pretty Ladies (1925) as a showgirl.
Crawford continued to star in bit parts, but bit parts added up and in 1928 she was cast in Our Dancing Daughters which took her star status to the moon. Now, at this time, most stars of the silent screen were seeing their careers fall flat because of their unappealing voices (like John Gilbert), but Crawford didnโt have that problem. Her first talking picture was the hit film Untamed (1929). Through the 1930s, Crawford became one of the shining stars at MGM. Her roles in Grand Hotel (1932), Sadie McKee (1934), and No More Ladies (1935) captivated audiences across the country.
However, things changed in the 1940s. Fresh, younger faces started coming into Hollywood and Crawford was no longer getting the A-list roles. She ended up leaving MGM for Warner Bros. which proved a good move, landing her the role of her career -- Mildred Pierce (1945) which led to her first and only Oscar win for Best Actress.
In her later life she went onto have more personal, public unwanted fame like her feud with What Ever Happened to Baby Jane co-star Bette Davis and her reputation for being unruly on set, an alcoholic, and as Bette Davis once said, โsheโs slept with every male star at MGM except Lassie.โ
On May 10, 1977, Crawford died of a heart attack in New York City at 71 years old. Her adopted daughter Christina (whom Crawford had disinherited) wrote a scathing account of her childhood in a novel famously titled โMommie Dearestโ where she painted Crawford as a monster.

He starred in many films throughout his career, but it was the crime drama The Thomas Crown Affair co-starring Faye Dunaway that many consider a signature role for him. McQueen passed from mesothelioma on November 7, 1980 at age 50.
